School Update

Dear Wolfpack families and students, the first week of school is in the books! Thank you to all of our staff, students and parents for making our first week back a successful one. I would especially like to take this opportunity to thank our Virtual Academy teachers for the immense task placed before them for this year's startup. We know that there have been many technical issues that needed to be sorted out this week. Thank you team Virtual! Your students are blessed to have such wonderful educators.
Going forward, we are presently preparing our staff and students for the new arrival/dismissal routines as we prepare to receive our students that will be taking the bus to school starting on Monday, September 14th and our students that will be part of the Extended Day Program. Please see below for the new arrival/departure routines.
There have been many changes to our school enrollment numbers over the last couple of weeks that require us to re-organize many of our class lists to ensure that we keep our class sizes as small as possible. Today the families of children that will be moving to a new class will receive a letter from myself indicating your child’s new classroom teacher. These changes will take effect on Monday, September 14th.  Please support us in our team decision concerning the move of your child as we have put forth the best scenario which meets the needs of all our Wolfpack members. I thank you for understanding the positive gains from equalling out our classes to ensure we have the least amount of students possible in each grade level. We understand that change for many of our students is often challenging especially in these ever changing times. I  appreciate your assistance in explaining these positives to your child in advance.  Your child’s  teacher will ensure there is a smooth transition and integration in the new classroom.

Arrival/Dismissal Routines

Starting Monday, September 14th, all of our junior students (Gr. 4-6) will have free entry into the school from 8:15am-8:30am. Students would still use their designated door entrance into the school. There will be a staff member at all doors greeting our junior students and directing them to head to their classrooms while another designated staff member will supervise the classes when students arrive. This strategy will prevent congestion on the side walks. Our primary students will continue to line up at their designated door entrance where their teacher will be waiting to receive them.

Late Arrivals / Early Dismissals

Dear Wolf pack families, we know that our new drop off and pick up routines have created challenges for families this year, especially because you are walking-a-block. Saying this, it is extremely difficult to get our students that don’t arrive by 8:30am into their classrooms as parents are still not permitted in the school to sign their children in. Understanding that unforeseen instances occur in the morning we still are asking all families to have their children at school before 8:30am as teachers and staff need to be in their classrooms. In the event that you are late you may need to wait outside by the main entrance until a staff member is able to let your children into the school. At the same time, we are also asking families to avoid picking up their children before 2:45pm for the same reasons mentioned above. We understand that an emergency and unforeseen circumstances arise in the day, but we would like to avoid families from routinely calling into the school to pick up their child(ren) before 2:45pm on a daily basis.

Social Distancing

Dear Parents, please praise your child(ren) for  maintaining our social distancing guidelines by remaining 2m a part while in the school. Understanding that during recess times our children are super excited to be outside and play with one another our next step will be to remind our children that games of ‘touch tag’ and physical contact are not permitted. Let’s work together by practicing our need to practice our social distancing during recess in our designated areas. Bravo to all of our students!

Transportation

OSTA NOTICE:

Changes are coming for transportation services for many of our OCSB students - due to a severe driver shortage. Some services will be cancelled or re-designed. Please check the Parent Portal on Friday, September 11th to make sure you know your child’s bus stop as many of the bus stops may have changed. OSTA is working to find creative solutions, and thank you for your patience during these challenging times. Read the full update herePresently, we are creating seating plans for the buses that will be provided to our STM students. However, for Monday morning drivers will instruct students to sit with siblings and first loaded will be directed to the back of the bus. Kinders and siblings will be directed to sit up front. Drivers will have the seating plans for the route home on Monday.  Let’s work together to teach our children to remain in their seats while on the bus. We do not want to have to remove students from the bus for unsafe practices. Thank you in advance for your cooperation.
To ensure that we avoid traffic congestion on Monday, September 14th, please continue to use the Walk-A-Block maps that show pathways and quiet side streets within a 5-10 minute walk of your child’s school. When parking on a side street, remember to park away from pathway entrances and intersections, and watch out for pedestrians.

Bus Zone

Our busses will have to be unloaded and loaded at the front of the school. This means that the ‘Bus Lane’ in front of the school will not be used for pick-up and drop-off before or after school. The parking lot will also be closed to all cars during these times. There are two exceptions: 1) Special Transportation Vans for our students and 2) parents with a valid accessible parking permit.

Loaner Devices

If you borrowed a Chromebook from the school during the initial shutdown between March and June and have not yet returned the borrowed device, please send it in with your child on  Monday, September 14th.

Medical Consent

We are reminding all parents that if their child requires an inhaler, an Epi-Pen, or other medication, it must be submitted to the office with correct forms signed. Please go to ocsb.ca/student-health and print off and sign any forms that are relevant to your child's needs. Please note: All new medications must have the signature of your child's family doctor. This is found at the link above. If your child requires an Epi-Pen or inhaler, a second one must be kept at the office. Please make your child's teacher and the main office aware of any new conditions or allergies, especially food sensitivities. Thank you for your cooperation in helping us keep your child safe at school.
